Frequently Asked Questions

What certifications do Birch Mattresses have?

Birch latex is Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) certified. Additionally, Birch natural mattresses produce low Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and are free of any polyurethane foams, fiberglass, formaldehyde, or pesticides, meeting the stringent chemical emissions requirements to achieve GREENGUARD Gold certification. This means there is no noxious off gassing.

Does the Birch Natural Mattress contain polyurethane foam?

Feel comfortable knowing Birch uses zero polyurethane based foams. That means no noxious off gassing. Safety first, second, and third.

Is the Birch Kids Natural Mattress the right choice for my child?

The Birch Kids Natural Mattress is thoughtfully designed with your child's safety as the number one priority. Birch has combined natural and organic materials that are free from harmful odors to create a 2-sided mattress with firmness levels tailored to your child's age and development.

Does the Birch Kids Natural Mattress work on bunk beds?

Birch designed the Birch Kids Natural Mattress with bunk beds in mind and limited the overall height of the mattress to 8 inches in order to be compatible with most bunk bed setups. Birch does highly recommend, though, that you consult the specific safety guidelines for your bunk bed to confirm whether it is compatible with an 8-inch mattress.

What makes a latex mattress unique?

Each Birch Natural Mattress is made with GOLS certified organic latex, which not only increases airflow to keep you cool and comfortable, it also provides targeted contouring and help reduce stress to your lower back. Firmer latex layers cradle your body and create the right pressure relief while you sleep, so you can wake up refreshed.

We recommend customers with a latex allergy consult with your medical provider before purchasing.

What if my child is big for their age?

In developing the Birch Kids Natural Mattress, Birch followed industry guidance around the support required for young sleepers as they grow. The firmer side of the mattress provides a bit more support for kids who are transitioning from a crib mattress. As kids grow and develop the softer side offers a bit more plush comfort.

That said, the age ranges provided on both sides of the Birch Kids Natural Mattress are meant only to offer guidance. Every child sleeps a bit differently and you know your child best! Birch encourages you and your child to test out both sides of the mattress to determine which side works best for them.

Reviews

Honest parent review

"The mattress is expensive, but the quality is very good and the firmness feels appropriate for kids. Overall, we’re happy with the mattress itself. However, we also purchased the mattress protector from the same company to prevent any accidents, and unfortunately, it does not fit well. Even when placed correctly, it tends to shift. One night, after an accident, the protector had moved enough that the mattress ended up getting wet. We later tried a different mattress protector from Amazon (an off-brand with good reviews), and it has worked much better, staying in place and fully protecting the mattress. It’s disappointing that the company’s own protector doesn’t fit as securely as expected, especially given the price. I hope they improve this, as a well-fitting protector is essential for kids’ mattresses."

Amazingly Comfy

"We love the quality and comfort of this mattress. It's an investment for our son as he grows into it. We're certain this mattress will last us many, many years. Great purchase."

Birch does not honor return policy

"Birch does not honor their return policy. I have tried many emails to start the return process, but keep getting the same response. . . Birch wants to send me a mattress topper. No Customer Service phone number or any othet way to contact Birch Customer Service. I am starting to wonder if this company is a scam. . ."

Josh F. (1/5)

Terrible service

"Arrived damaged and nobody ever responded to my email requesting a refund or replacement"

Victor R. (1/5)

Love the mattress!

"It fits the trundle perfectly. Love that we can flip it over for a firm sitting position when no one will be sleeping on it."

Julie B. (5/5)

Not actually two sided

"I was really hopeful that this mattress would be a great option for my growing child, and the two sided part was very appealing. Unfortunately, the side for younger children is like sitting and lane directly on the springs. There is almost no padding or cushion on the springs and is incredibly uncomfortable. The opposite side is fine, but the point of paying a premium for this mattress was to have it to have a dual purpose. I would not recommend this mattress if you plan on using it for both sides."

Luis G. (2/5)

Mattress arrived dirty, customer service didn’t respond

"I reached out to say that the mattress arrived dirty. No one ever responded."

Megan P. (1/5)

Disappointed

"I ordered two of these for my twins and was so disappointed. As soon as I opened them I could feel every spring. After sitting for days I could still feel them. They also just seem poorly made and I don’t feel like they would last at all. I reached out to customer service, had one response, and then nothing. I will be returning them as soon as the 30 days are up. Definitely not what I was expecting, especially for the price."

Jenny W. (1/5)

Happy and Healthy!

"The mattress seems really high quality and I appreciate the natural fiber construction. It's a little firmer than my mattress, but it's comfortable for me to snuggle with my 4 year old on when she needs me, and my 4 year old herself seems to sleep soundly on it! We bought this alongside some organic pillows and I can rest easier knowing that she isn't sleeping on toxic materials."

Alison C. (5/5)

reasonably satisfied

"Pros: supports US industry. supports organic supply chains. came quickly. plusher side comfortable for organic (coil/foam orgo combo will never be as soft/plush as oil based foams, v. worth the trade off for enviro). good depth for bunk bed. on sale, comparable price to sim. products such as avocados kids twin. Cons: wrapped in so. much. plastic. can’t even reuse because it’s sticky. casing was on upside down, indicating the older child side was the younger child side, suggested quality control issues. the double-sided means shorter life for mattress since you can’t flip if you’re child is already past SIDs risk age when you buy. the hard side seems too hard for even the SIDS risk, you can feel springs. but I’m not professional so don’t know. the avocado child twin has the inch of foam on both sides so that might be a longer lifespan. look at European Sleepworks eco child mattress if you need 8” twin. I haven’t bought but wish I’d seen first. I love the adult mattresses and is better price than Birch, locally made and sim materials. But overall I’m happy with the Birch two months in and glad the consumer decision making is over for that at least."
